Overview

Lipidomics

Lipids are a large group of chemically and structurally non-homogeneous compounds found in nature that are highly soluble in organic solvents. They include mainly fatty acids and their naturally occurring derivatives, as well as compounds related to their biosynthesis and function. According to the latest LIPID MAPS classification, lipids are classified into eight major groups in terms of chemical structure and biosynthesis, namely: fatty acyls, glycerolipids, glycerol-phospholipids, sphingolipids, sterollipids, prenolipids, saccharo-lipids, polyketides.

Lipidomics is a branch of metabolomics and is generally considered to be the study of the properties of all lipid molecules in an organism and their role in protein expression and gene regulation.

There are many established methods for lipid analysis, mainly TLC, GC-MS, ESI-MS, MALDITOF-MS, NMR, etc. The more advanced ESI-MS method is capable of qualitative and quantitative analysis of the molecular species of lipids and has become a powerful tool for lipid analysis.
